Together with the Center for Life Cycle Analysis and Sustainable Design (CADIS) we created a carbon footprint and water footprint calculator to measure and understand our impact. By knowing it, you will be able to decide what are the best actions you can take to reduce it.
The carbon footprint is a part of the environmental footprint. All products and services generate a carbon footprint because throughout their life cycle they emit gases that cause climate change, better known as Greenhouse Gases (GHG). This can occur during any or all stages of the life cycle of products and services, from the extraction of the materials from which they are made, to their disposal or recycling if appropriate.
The unit of measurement of the carbon footprint is KgCO2eq, which means that all GHGs emitted during the entire life cycle are represented by this indicator.
All the products and services you consume every day generate GHG emissions at each stage of their life cycle, causing an environmental impact known as climate change or carbon footprint (ISO 14067). This impact is calculated using a factor that expresses the strength with which each emission contributes to this environmental problem, taking CO2 as a reference.
The carbon footprint is generated when you consume the products and services that allow you to develop your daily life during a year, it is estimated from the information we collect from your lifestyle and some national statistics.
The ISO 14067 standardizes the methodology of the carbon footprint, based on this standard and the simplified form this application performs the calculation as follows:
Your lifestyle information X factor = Carbon footprint (KgCo2eq)2.
Información de tu estilo de vida X factor = Huella de carbono (KgCo2eq)2.
The result obtained shows the impact generated so that you can enjoy the services and products you consume according to your lifestyle.
The water scarcity footprint is a part of the environmental footprint. All products and services generate a water scarcity footprint because throughout all stages of their life cycle they consume water, causing a decrease in the availability of the resource (water stress).
Water is required for all your daily activities, from the extraction of materials for the products you consume, the energy and fuels you use at home and for transportation, to the treatment of the waste you generate.
The unit of measurement of the water scarcity footprint is m3 of H2Oeq.
To calculate the impact of water scarcity, you must look beyond the amount of cubic meters you consume (volume), since when you use water, both human beings and other living beings no longer have access to it.
Therefore, in addition to the volume consumed, it is necessary to consider the water stress of the area or place where the water is being consumed.
The water scarcity footprint that is generated when you consume the products and services that allow you to develop your daily life during a year, is estimated following the ISO 1446 standard.
From the information we collect about your lifestyle, we obtain the cubic meters consumed and finally multiply it by the factor that takes into account the water stress of the place where the water is consumed (AWARE).
The result obtained shows the lack of water that other people and living beings (plants, animals, ecosystems) will have due to the lifestyle you currently enjoy.
